We enable the design of a sustainable energy system

As a research institute for energy economics and industry, we also want to be an active example for implementing the energy transition on site and make a lasting contribution to climate protection. This is reflected in our current research results, the training and further education of scientists and actions at our site.

Create knowledge

Studies on increasing energy efficiency, integration of renewable energies and forward-looking technologies are our fundamental contribution to a sustainable transformation of the energy system. We create application-oriented knowledge that decision-makers in politics, companies and private individuals can rely on. In this way, the FfE contributes to the implementation of the energy transition through its daily work.

Train experts and multipliers

The education and training of students and academic staff is the statutory objective of the FfE. We develop methods for the analysis of complex future issues and attach great importance to objective and scientifically sound criteria and the corresponding communication of results by our employees to the outside world. In the long term, they will act as multipliers and make an important contribution to objective debates in business and society.

Applied energy transition at the FfE

At our Munich location, we are actively contributing to climate protection through our internal project FfEnergiewende with the following measures:

  • Participation: A successful energy system transformation must take people with it. The most valuable resource for achieving the FfEnergiewende is our employees, whom we motivate and support to implement climate protection measures. Exemplary behaviour also has an external effect and contributes to raising awareness in society.
  • Mobility: A declared goal is to reduce business travel to cases where other means of communication are not sufficient. Our fleet consists of one electric and one hybrid vehicle for business trips by car. In principle, we try to avoid air travel, but if it is necessary in exceptional cases, the resulting greenhouse gas emissions are compensated by “atmosfair”. We support our employees when switching to environmentally friendly means of transport, e.g. by providing free charging facilities for electric vehicles at our institute. Through incentives to participate in climate protection campaigns such as the “Stadtradln” and joint sporting activities such as running events, we promote both the commitment to environmentally friendly mobility and the health of our employees.
  • Procurement: When selecting our equipment, we take sustainability criteria such as the energy efficiency of products into account. In addition, when catering larger events in our premises, we make sure that we also offer food with a lower climate footprint.
  • Energy consumption: By continuously monitoring our building energy consumption, we can identify measures to improve our processes. Part of our electricity consumption is provided by a solar system. We use the considerable waste heat from our computer centre to heat our offices.
