The accompanying research project BEniVer started on 01.06.2018. in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Institut für ZukunftsEnergie- und Stoffstromsysteme (IZES gGmbh), the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS), the Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the Deutsche Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) the Research Centre for Energy Economics (FfE) accompanies the funding initiative Energiewende im Verkehr (Energy Turnaround in Transport) initiated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).
It promotes technical joint projects in the field of alternative, electricity-based fuels. The tasks of the accompanying research are divided into the development of energy system scenarios, the techno-economic evaluation of the production and application of the fuels, the development of traffic scenarios, acceptance analyses, the analysis of market launch scenarios and an ecological evaluation.
The FfE takes over the management of the sub-project "Ecological Assessment". In addition to its own analysis, the FfE will also provide scientific support in the field of ecology.
Objective of the substantive work of the FfE
The production and use of electricity-based fuels, often referred to as power-to-liquids (PtL) or powerfuels, is in an early stage of research or is not yet taking place. In order to be able to make rational decisions when setting the political and economic course in this field, holistic economic and ecological studies are required.
In the course of BEniVer, the FfE dedicates itself to these topics in the form of life cycle assessments. Thus, references for both conventional and electricity-based fuels are created and these life cycles are supplemented and adapted with the data generated in the implementation projects. Based on the resulting knowledge, well-founded statements on the ecological and economic evaluation of options for action are possible.

Scientific guidance of the technical collaborative projects
As part of the scientific support in the field of life cycle assessment within the funding initiative, the working group Life Cycle Assessment was founded. It is open to all LCA experts who deal with the topic of synthetic fuels. In addition to simple networking, it discusses and harmonises methodological approaches and discusses results.

In order to ensure comparable life cycle assessments within the funding initiative, the FfE has drawn up methodological guidelines for life cycle assessments (only available in German) of synthetic fuels. This serves as a supplement to existing standards and guidelines with the perspective of synthetic fuels. It provides a framework with regard to system boundaries, possible impact indicators, allocation and presentation of results. The first version of the guideline, which was published in January 2020, is being continuously developed and supplemented.
