The accompanying research project BEniVer started on 01.06.2018. in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Institut für ZukunftsEnergie- und Stoffstromsysteme (IZES gGmbh), the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS), the Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the Deutsche Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) the Research Centre for Energy Economics (FfE) accompanies the funding initiative Energiewende im Verkehr (Energy Turnaround in Transport) initiated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).
This initiative promotes research and development projects in the field of alternative, electricity-based fuels. The tasks of the accompanying research are divided into the development of energy system scenarios, the techno-economic evaluation of the production and use of fuels, the development of traffic scenarios, acceptance analyses, the analysis of market launch scenarios and an ecological evaluation.
The objectives of the work of the FfE
The production and deployment of power-based fuels, often also known as power-to-liquids (PtL) or powerfuels, are at a very early research stage. In order to be able to make rational decisions on the political and economic course in this field, holistic economic and ecological investigations are required.
In the course of BEniVer, the FfE devotes itself to these topics in the form of life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC). References are made for both conventional and electricity-based fuels and these lifecycles are supplemented and adapted with the data generated in the implementation projects. Based on the resulting knowledge, well-founded statements on the ecological and economic evaluation of options for action are possible.

Work contents of the FfE
The FfE takes over the management of the sub-project "Ecological Assessment". In this context, the FfE supports the project-leading DLR in networking within the funding initiative, merging the assessments and transferring knowledge to the public. In addition, there is the processing of the data of the realisation projects, development as well as the implementation of the life cycle assessments and the synthesis of results in the field of ecological assessment.
