How could the market ramp-up for CO2 capture, transportation and certificates take shape?

While the carbon management ramp-up phase is accompanied by support measures, an economic market is to be established in the long term. Various mechanisms and models are currently being discussed in order to create reliable framework conditions for the players, make sensible use of voluntary markets and European emissions trading and ensure an efficient ramp-up.

The aim is to create a European pipeline infrastructure for transportation. Its economic operation depends, among other things, on the regulatory framework to be created and the actual quantities of CO2 produced. This infrastructure will be supplemented by other transport modalities, such as truck, rail or ship, especially in the ramp-up phase. The gradual development of the pipeline infrastructure must be synchronized with the development of the amount of CO2 captured, for example through the formation of regional CO2 clusters.

In this context, we are therefore addressing the following questions:

  • Which regions in Germany and Bavaria in particular are suitable for CO2 clusters?
  • What are the drivers and obstacles for the players involved?
  • Which transportation modalities are available and at what cost?
  • How can the various interests be coordinated and holistic concepts developed?
