International energy price comparison for industry

Competitive energy prices are a basic prerequisite for a strong industry. Our latest study, conducted on behalf of the Vereinigung der Bayrischen Wirtschaft e.V (vbw), shows that Germany continues to be one of the countries with comparatively high electricity and gas prices in an international comparison.

As part of the study, we systematically researched and compared energy prices for energy-intensive industrial companies in Europe and in key international comparison countries. These include the US, China, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea – countries that play an important role for German companies both as sales markets and as potential alternative production locations.

This study creates a transparent database for evaluating Germany as a business location by

  • providing information on electricity price components and industrial relief in Europe
  • presenting the development of electricity and gas prices from 2020 to 2024 in a European comparison and comparing them with selected non-European industrial locations for the year 2024
  • showing the price levels of Chinese provinces and individual US states in an excursus
  • providing an outlook on the development of electricity and gas prices in Europe until 2050, including an international classification.

Creating transparency despite challenging data situation

Analyzing international energy prices is challenging due to a wide variety of data sources, national regulations, and, in some cases, widely differing tax systems. In order to ensure the greatest possible transparency despite the challenging data situation, official data sets from government and semi-governmental agencies as well as supplementary market and industry sources were systematically collected, collated, and presented in a transparent manner. The study thus creates a transparent data basis that enables a substantiated assessment of international energy price levels.
