In-house energy generation for businesses

On behalf of the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw – Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft e.V.), FfE created a decision-making guide on the topic of in-house energy generation for companies in Bavaria as part of this project. The main objective of the project is to provide practical knowledge for decision-making and project planning for PV and wind energy systems.

Motivation

In response to high and volatile electricity prices, as well as growing climate protection and sustainability requirements, companies are turning their attention to the topic of in-house energy generation. However, due to technical, legal, and economic complexities, the planning of such plants must be carefully thought out and approached in a structured manner.

Project Objectives

The guide is intended to provide companies with practical guidance. It explains key decision-making criteria for PV and wind energy systems, as well as the project planning process from preliminary planning to approval and financing to plant construction. It aims to realistically assess potential, highlight pitfalls, and enable informed investment decisions on proprietary energy projects.

Results

The decision-making guide focuses on PV and wind energy systems. For each of these, the guide contains checklists, decision-making criteria, approval and grid connection issues, funding mechanisms, and sample calculations for economic feasibility studies. Another key element is an overview of relevant stakeholders in the project planning process, which also identifies potential risks and pitfalls.

Finally, a brief overview of power purchase agreements (PPAs) as a marketing and financing instrument is provided.
