Cooperation Forum Electrification of Logistics
Practical Solutions for the Roll-Out of Electric Logistics Fleets
The electrification of logistics is progressing – while complexity is increasing for logistics, grid operators, infrastructure providers, and technology suppliers. Different technical prerequisites, lengthy grid connection processes, and high requirements for planning reliability make implementation difficult. These challenges become more complex the larger the share of the fleet that needs to be electrified.
With the Cooperation Forum ‘Electrification of Logistics’, FfE offers a structured, scientifically grounded format that brings together all relevant stakeholder groups, consolidates knowledge, and develops practical solutions for fleet transformation.
Four Key Areas of Action
The forum is accelerating the electrification of road-based logistics by:
- Fleet Conversion & Electricity Procurement
Electric lorries require new strategic decisions:
-
-
- Investment criteria & TCO considerations
- Planning the fleet conversion and time horizons
- Requirements for charging infrastructure operators
- Development of suitable electricity procurement models (e.g. PPAs)
-
- Charging Network & Routing
A charging infrastructure that meets demand is essential for reliable route planning:
-
-
- Requirements of freight forwarders regarding public and semi-public charging
- Route-specific charging requirements
- Integration of charging times into operational processes
-
- Portfolio Optimisation
Depots form the backbone of electrified logistics fleets:
-
-
- Optimisation upstream and downstream of the grid connection point
- Sizing of charging capacity and energy requirements
- Integration of operational processes and depot logistics
- Utilisation of potential flexibility measures and storage options
-
- Network connection & integration
The grid connection remains a key bottleneck at many logistics sites:
-
-
-
- Transparency regarding network operators’ processes
- Requirements for connection capacity and load profiles
- Dealing with capacity bottlenecks
- Identification of network-friendly measures and operating strategies
-
-
Objectives of the Cooperation Forum ‘Electrification of Logistics’
The Forum accelerates the electrification of road-based logistics through:
- neutral, moderated dialogue between logistics providers, network operators, OEMs, charging infrastructure operators and other stakeholders,
- scientifically based analyses that make the challenges tangible and support decision-making,
- co-creative workshops in which concrete solution options are developed,
- clear, actionable guidelines that are incorporated into a publicly available guide.
The forum builds on the success story of the FfE’s existing cooperation forums and applies the solution-oriented approach to logistics electrification.
The forum was designed as a practical, solution-oriented format.
The methodological approach includes:
- Structured exchange: In-depth, research-based analyses of current issues by the FfE contribute to the development of potential solutions.
- Scientific support: We contribute to solution‑finding through in‑depth, research‑based analyses of current issues.
- Developing solutions from diverse components: Our aim is to develop solutions that are supported by a majority of the participating companies.
In addition, we are engaged in dialogue with regulatory decisionmakers. The cooperation forum ‘Electrification of Logistics’ is supported by the associations vbw and BDEW.
