Carbon Capture and Storage in the Context of Blue H₂ – Brief study
Brief study for a German energy supplier
The deployment of hydrogen and its derivatives is crucial to achieving climate targets. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in energy generation, hydrogen is to be used in power plants in the long term. Until green hydrogen becomes available, the use of blue hydrogen is a bridging technology for energy suppliers that needs to be tested. As part of the project with a German energy supplier, various technologies for the production of blue hydrogen are being evaluated in terms of their carbon footprint and techno-economic parameters, and the regulatory framework and stakeholders involved are being analyzed.
Methodology
The aim of the project is to evaluate technologies for CO₂ capture and storage for the production of blue hydrogen. This should then make it possible to assess whether the use of blue hydrogen in gas-fired power plants represents an economic alternative in the ramp-up phase of the hydrogen economy. For this purpose, various process and cost parameters for the process steps are combined and standardized to the amount of hydrogen produced. In order to classify the remaining emissions for the provision of blue hydrogen, the entire process chain with various options for CO₂ capture, CO₂ transport and CO₂ storage is considered and options for reducing GHG emissions are identified.
The project is carried out in the following steps:
- Techno-economic analysis of the production of blue hydrogen including CO₂ capture, CO₂ transport and CO₂ storage.
- Setting up an Excel tool to calculate remaining emissions across the entire value chain
- Analysis and comparative consolidation of the applicable legal and regulatory framework conditions at German, EU and U.S. level
- Stakeholder analysis based on existing pilot projects.
- Interactive webinar on CCU/S as internal knowledge building for the client
As a deliverable, the client is handed a set of slides for the topic CCU/S, the compilation, relevant regulatory framework conditions and the Excel tool for calculating emissions in the blue hydrogen production chain.
