Waste Heat Network – Shape the Flagship Project for Efficient Heat Utilisation

Every day, large amounts of usable waste heat are generated in industrial processes, while at the same time the demand for climate‑neutral heat supply in industry, municipalities and neighbourhoods is steadily increasing. Despite this complementary situation, many economically and ecologically viable waste heat potentials remain unused, as supply and demand are still insufficiently connected. Waste heat avoidance and utilisation are therefore key levers for increasing energy efficiency and decarbonising the heat supply.

The planned waste heat network in the Augsburg region addresses this challenge by connecting relevant stakeholders and actively supporting the practical implementation of waste heat solutions. The network is scheduled to start at the end of the first quarter of 2026. Its aim is to systematically tap into industrial waste heat potentials and make them available for climate‑friendly heat supply in industry, municipalities and neighbourhoods.

By bringing together a wide range of actors, the network provides a platform for exchange, cooperation and the concrete implementation of waste heat projects. Expert workshops, moderated peer exchange and individual on‑site meetings support participants in jointly overcoming technical, economic and regulatory challenges.

The network is led and implemented by Forschungsgesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft mbH (FfE), in cooperation with Stadtwerke Augsburg (swa) and based on the nationally funded AwaNetz project.

Interested companies are invited to obtain early information and become part of the regional network for efficient and climate‑neutral heat utilisation. The network is particularly aimed at companies with relevant heat sources or heat demands that are actively engaged in heat distribution as well as internal and/or external waste heat utilisation, and that wish to further develop related issues strategically and put them into practice.
