Invitation to the Info Event “Regulatory Sandboxes: The Next Step of the Energy Transition”
After many decades of energy research, many current energy transition questions are no longer techno-economic construction sites but questions of implementation: How do we get the concepts into practice? What are the repercussions of mass application? Do the ideas fit into the legal-regulatory framework?
The “Reallabore der Energiewende” funding format addresses these questions, supporting the transfer of sustainable concepts into practice. The aim is to advance innovative technologies and business models and develop them from prototypes to market maturity. A technology can only survive on the market once it has become economically competitive. Regulatory sandboxes enable the symbiosis of science-based conception, large-scale testing, and direct linkage to the processes of the actors in real operations, which is necessary for a successful energy transition.
The event organized by the Bavarian Coordination Office for Regulatory Sandboxes at the FfE (BayKoRL) will take a closer look at the concept of “Regulatory Sandboxes of the Energy Transition”. The presentations at the event will provide insights into how such a regulatory sandbox is to be designed, which topics can be addressed in it, and how a funding application must be formulated. In addition, the practical experiences of an existing regulatory sandbox will be shared in an impulse lecture.

- Andreas Weigand, consultant for decentralized energy systems at the Stadtwerke München (Munich municipal utility)
- Susanne Hirschmann, Scientific Officer Environment, Energy & Bioeconomy at the Bavarian Research Alliance
The event is aimed at the entire energy transition community in all phases of a project development of a regulatory sandbox and gives an overview of the process there: from the development of a first project idea and the framework conditions to be considered, to the correct filing of the funding application and the support therein, to insights into the everyday life of a Regulatory sandbox.

The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy established the Bavarian Coordination Office for Regulatory Sandboxes (BayKoRL) to support the application of Bavarian regulatory sandbox ideas for the federal funding “Reallabore der Energiewende” (www.energieforschung.de/foerderkonzept-reallabore). The goal of BayKoRL is to bring together interested partners to form consortia with innovative project ideas. In addition, BayKoRL helps with the technical-scientific design to create a powerful regulatory sandboxes application.
