Successful workshop on the decarbonization of Saxony’s economy – Technical, economic, and regulatory framework conditions

On August 27, 2025, a workshop took place in Dresden as part of the project “Decarbonization Options and Pathways for the Saxon Economy”. The project is being carried out on behalf of the Saxon State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour, Energy and Climate Protection (SMWA) and the Saxon Energy Agency – SAENA GmbH. It is handled by the Research Society for Energy Economics (FfE) with comprehensive techno-economic expertise and the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) for legal and regulatory issues.

The aim of the project is to analyse the current status of decarbonisation in selected sectors of industry and crafts, to identify concrete needs for action and to identify transformation options. Technologies – such as electrification and green hydrogen – are assessed in terms of their availability and economic impact. In addition to the purely technical consideration, the focus is also on the interaction processes with the upstream energy infrastructure.

In the workshop, the first work statuses were discussed and the priorities for further elaboration were agreed in order to ensure practical results. Representatives of Saxony’s business associations, chambers, distribution system operators, TU Dresden, Saxon Development Bank and the Saxon Ministry of Economic Affairs took part, among others.

The focus was on the technical possibilities for decarbonisation, legal and regulatory framework conditions, as well as the factors influencing the profitability of the various measures. The open and constructive exchange between industry, grid operators and other stakeholders provided important contributions and impulses for the remaining project processing.

We would like to thank all participants for the dialogue and active participation. We are looking forward to the final conference on December 11, 2025 at the Mittweida hydropower plantregistration is already open.
