Real-Time Electricity Mix Data: Green Grid Compass Released
+++ Digital Tool Provides Hourly Data on CO₂ Intensity and Renewable Energy in the European Electricity Bidding Zones +++ The TÜV SÜD-verified methodology has been extended to European bidding zones. +++ New application supports users in intelligent energy management. +++
Berlin, February 18, 2025 – The transmission system operators 50Hertz and TenneT, together with FfE, have officially launched the Green Grid Compass. This digital tool provides hourly data on CO₂ intensity and the share of renewable energy in European electricity bidding zones. The Green Grid Compass is available at www.greengrid-compass.eu and offers valuable data for businesses and consumers, serving as a solid foundation for intelligent energy management.
Transparent Calculation Methodology for All of Europe
The Green Grid Compass is based on the calculation methodology of the CO2 Monitor, which was developed by FfE in cooperation with TenneT and tested by TÜV SÜD. This enables a transparent representation of the electricity mix composition, associated greenhouse gas emissions, and the share of renewable energy in European bidding zones.
In addition to historical and real-time data, forecasts are also available for the Germany-Luxembourg and Belgium bidding zones. This complies with the EU requirements outlined in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), which mandates transmission system operators to provide hourly data on CO₂ intensity and the share of renewable energy.
Application in Businesses
The digital tool allows for a time-resolved electricity balance. To meet increasing corporate requirements, the Green Grid Compass provides insights into both operational CO₂ emissions and life cycle emissions. Users can differentiate between production and consumption mixes, enabling them to optimize decisions based on real-time data.
The data is available via API or as a downloadable dataset, ensuring seamless integration into existing systems and applications.Use Cases for the Green Grid Compass
The tool offers a wide range of applications:
- Flexibility Optimization: Businesses and consumers can adjust their load profiles to reduce CO₂ emissions, for example, through controlled charging of electric vehicles or demand-driven use of flexible power generation.
- Sustainability Reporting: The provided data supports companies in reporting according to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). It enables location-based accounting of emissions from electricity consumption and can be used to calculate avoided emissions, such as those from battery storage.
Networking and Collaboration in the Implementation Network
To further promote the application possibilities, 50Hertz and TenneT, together with FfE, have initiated an implementation network. This network connects companies from the energy sector and other industries with academic and political stakeholders. The goal is to facilitate exchange through regular workshops and to test use cases in real-world applications.
Companies already involved in the network include Bayernwerk, Mercedes-Benz, Clever-PV, Covestro, Edenberg, EWE Hydrogen, Stromdao, Lichtblick, UnternehmerTUM, VK Energie, and OLI Systems. The network remains open to additional interested participants.
Free Access and Easy Integration
The Green Grid Compass can be integrated into existing systems via an API interface. The API and further information are available free of charge on the official website www.greengrid-compass.eu.
