Closing event of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Network (4E)
On Wednesday, July 14, 2021, the final event of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Network (4E) took place at the Audi Dome of FC Bayern Basketball. After digital events in the network recently due to the Corona pandemic, all participants were pleased to be able to organize the closing network meeting in person.
The participating companies were able to achieve and even exceed their set targets from 2018 to 2021. A special feature of the first 4E network is that, in addition to CO2 savings and energy efficiency targets, expansion targets for renewable energies were also set.
In figures, this results in an energy efficiency increase of 5.2%, a CO2 reduction of 5.3% and an expansion of renewable energies by 3,300 MWh/a compared to the base year 2017. This means that the targets set at the beginning of the network’s work of a 4.8% primary energy reduction and CO2 reduction each, as well as an expansion of renewable energy by 2,000 MWh/a, were sometimes significantly exceeded. In absolute terms, more than 248,000 MWh of primary energy could be saved per year. This corresponds to about 300 flights (a total of about 86,000 air travelers) from Frankfurt to New York.
Following a welcoming address by the network sponsors BayWa r.e. and Bayerngas Energie, there was a short review on the past three years of network work. The topics covered ranged from technical issues such as efficient drive systems and measurement technology to organizational issues such as employee motivation. Topics going beyond pure energy efficiency, such as decarbonization strategies, greenhouse gas reduction and compensation, were also on the agenda.
Afterwards, network participants were able to report on their personal highlights and on their favorite measure implemented during the term. Equally exciting were the reports on current challenges the companies are facing, which have to be mastered successfully further on.
After the presentation of the certificates, the participants had the opportunity to round off the workshop with a tour of the Audi Dome.
Due to the positive experiences, this network conclusion also means the initiation of a new network round starting this fall. New and interested participants are welcome to contact us.

Christian Amann (Energiemanager Johns Manville GmbH)
“Even after 12 years of network participation, I am thrilled every time by the industry tours – I always dive into “New Worlds” there.” (FfE-translation of original German quote)
Harald Metzger (Lead Energy & Projects Canon Production Printing)
“The particular success of the 4E Network lies in the fact that the topic of renewable energies in the industry is addressed in an appropriately prominent manner alongside energy efficiency. I see a stronger exchange between companies on this important topic as essential for a successful energy transition and achievement of our climate targets.” (FfE-translation of original German quote)
Dr. Michael Klärner (Global Carbon Reduction Champion, W.L. Gore & Associates GmbH)
“Through the 4E Network, we were able to intensively support the participating companies in their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and drive forward the expansion of renewable energies. Our targets were exceeded, in particular, the renewable energy expansion target that we set for the first time with the 4E Network. The cooperation with Bayerngas, FfE, and all partners was excellent. FfE made a decisive contribution to the success of the Network through its excellent moderation and advice. We are very pleased with these results and the planned continuation of the Network.” (FfE-translation of original German quote)
